When we were expecting our first child, we start exploring everything about babies. And there is always a confusion about diapers.
What are Cloth Diapers?
For thousands of years, people have been using cloth diapers as conventional diapers. Cloth diapers are made from natural materials such as cotton. But nowadays we get hybrid diapers from the market which has an outer waterproof cloth and an inner water-absorbent material. The best part of using cloth diapers is that they are reusable as they can be washed like any other cloth.
What Are Disposable Diapers?
In 1948 disposable diapers were invented. They have well structured than the cloth diapers as its inner lining is made from a material that has high absorption property. In today's world, everyone is busy working outside, they don't have much time to wash and dry the cloth diapers. Because of this, people rapidly shifted from cloth diapers to disposable diapers. Disposable diapers can be used once and should be discarded. Disposable diapers contain chemicals that can irritate babies.
Cloth or Disposable Diapers – Which is Better?
1. Comfort and Absorption
Cloth diapers are made from natural materials such as cotton, linen, wool, etc. The cloth diaper is a combination of natural materials and with the human-made materials such as nylon, polyester, etc, they are used as the non-absorbent liners. Thus helps to keep the diaper dry. Disposable diapers are made of polyethylene, or similar plastics, and has a high absorption level. When it comes to comfort, using disposable diapers increases the genital skin temperature, in future which can cause a reduction in sperm production. But On the other hand, cloth diapers give sufficient space for the baby to move around. And this allows better air to circulate inside the diaper. Thus helping to maintain a healthy temperature level for the baby.
2. Effects on Health
Disposable diapers may have many chemicals like fragrance and dyes to provide pleasing colors and aromas. Petroleum byproducts are used in the making of disposable diapers. Cancer-causing agents like dioxin are used in its preparation. All these chemicals can cause many health problems in babies. Disposable diapers have more absorbent property thus it causes fewer diaper rashes. In total when it comes to health it is better to use a cloth diaper. Changing cloth diapers more often can reduce the rash problem.
3. Cost
As diapers are required for a couple of years, its cost is an important factor for many people. It is necessary to change the diaper more often otherwise it may negatively affect the baby. On an average baby goes through 8 to 12 diapers per day. On the other hand, using a cloth diaper add some side costs. For example, buying the baby-friendly detergents are expensive, washing machines for cleaning them will increase electricity bills and water need.
4. Convenience
Disposable diapers are simple to use and they are very useful while traveling. On the other hand, using a cloth diaper demands a complex procedure.
5. Impact on the Environment
The usage of diapers has a severe impact on the environment. Billions of disposable diapers are dumped which affects the environment adversely. Because diapers in landfills take up to 500 years to degrade.
NOTE: There are both advantages and disadvantages of using a cloth diaper and disposable diaper. It is the responsibility of the parent to actually learn the pros and cons and then decide which to choose. At the end of the day, it's all about your baby's comfort and your preference.
